This helmet design job was a special gift request for a close friend who is an avid cart racing driver. Due to the actual complexity of the process and then the success of the final product, meant it had to be included in Turbine's Port Folio. The actual process is displayed below – from the design process, the measurement and placement, to the final vinyl application. The vinyl application route was approved due to possible more frequent design changes in the near future – the more permanent airbrush method would have been way more expensive. Automotive vinyl is extremely pliable and bends out of shape very easily to fit in between vehicle contours and gaps. With this specific design, the vinyl panels had to be precise and align to the helmet contours and each other. The only way to ensure this, was to use backing tape on the vinyl strips – thus keeping the proportions and size, but now being less pliable on the dome-shaped lid. However, i think a very striking new look for Ben's helmet was achieved in the end!
